INDOOR DUST CHARACTERIZATION

What is a dust characterization?

Sometimes it is more important to determine the type of dust in a room than the concentration in the air.

For example, dust characterization can be used to determine the source (cause) of the dust.

Once the source is found, it can be reduced or removed altogether.

Dust characterization can be performed, for example, by sampling the dust with an adhesive strip, and then examining it microscopically in the laboratory.

In this laboratory test, the dust can be analyzed for the following substances:

  • Ash particles
  • Mineral fibers
  • Hair
  • Wood
  • Skin flakes
  • Insect remains
  • Lime (boiler scale)
  • Carbon fiber
  • Metal
  • Oil/fat
  • Organic material
  • Paper fibers (cardboard)
  • Plastic
  • Rust
  • Soot particles/rubber particles
  • Pollen
  • Textile fiber
  • Paint particles
  • Sand
